The Science of Tandem Lifting: Achieving Millimeter Precision in Precast Yards
In modern High-Speed Railway (HSR) and mega-highway projects, the precast yard is the beating heart of the operation. Here, massive concrete box girders weighing anywhere from 450t to over 1,000t are manufactured, stored, and loaded.

Moving these colossal structures from the casting pedestal to the storage area, and eventually onto the Beam Transporter, requires sheer brute force. But more importantly, it requires absolute precision. This is where the science of Tandem Lifting (using two Beam Lifting Gantry Cranes simultaneously) becomes the most critical operation in your precast yard.
The Hidden Danger: Torsional Stress and Micro-Cracks
Concrete is incredibly strong under compression, but notoriously vulnerable to tensile and torsional (twisting) stress.
When a 32-meter-long, 900-ton box girder is suspended in the air by two independent gantry cranes, they must act as a single, perfectly synchronized machine.
If Crane A hoists its end of the girder even slightly faster than Crane B, a height differential occurs. This height difference forces the rigid concrete girder to twist. A deviation of just a few centimeters is enough to induce structural micro-cracks in the concrete web.
A cracked girder cannot be deployed. Rejecting a single 900t box girder results in catastrophic material waste, project delays, and financial losses amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.
The Solution: Advanced PLC Synchronization Technology
To eliminate human error and mechanical discrepancies, our Beam Lifting Gantry Cranes are engineered with state-of-the-art PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) Synchronization Systems.

Here is how our technology guarantees millimeter-level precision during a tandem lift:
1. Real-Time Absolute Encoders
Both gantry cranes are equipped with high-precision absolute encoders on their hoisting drums and travel mechanisms. These sensors monitor the exact lifting height and travel distance down to the millimeter, feeding data back to the central PLC thousands of times per second.
2. VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) Inverter Control
Instead of traditional jerky stop-and-go motors, our lifting mechanisms are powered by advanced VFDs. The central PLC constantly compares the height data from Crane A and Crane B. If Crane A begins to lift 2mm faster than Crane B, the PLC instantly instructs Crane A’s VFD to micro-adjust its speed, seamlessly bringing both cranes back into perfect horizontal alignment.
3. Strict < 5mm Error Tolerance
Through the combination of encoders and VFD control, our tandem lifting system maintains a maximum lifting height differential of less than 5mm across the entire length of the girder. This ultra-tight tolerance ensures the concrete remains entirely free from torsional stress from the moment it leaves the ground to the moment it rests on the transporter.
Beyond Hoisting: Cross-Travel and Long-Travel Sync
Tandem synchronization isn’t just about lifting up and down. Moving a suspended 1,000t girder across the precast yard requires the cranes to drive forward (Long-Travel) and move their trolleys side-to-side (Cross-Travel) with the same flawless coordination.
Our wireless tandem control allows a single operator, using an industrial-grade remote control, to command both machines simultaneously. The “Master-Slave” PLC network ensures that both cranes accelerate, cruise, and brake as one unified entity.
Engineered for the Heavy-Duty Reality (Class A5/A6)
Precision means nothing if the equipment cannot withstand the grueling schedule of a mega-project. Our Beam Lifting Gantries are built to Working Class A5 to A6 standards. This means the motors, gearboxes, and steel structures are oversized and engineered for high-frequency, 24/7 continuous yard operations without succumbing to fatigue.
Conclusion: Protecting Your Most Valuable Assets
A precast yard is a high-stakes environment. You are not just buying two lifting cranes; you are investing in an insurance policy for your concrete girders and your project timeline.
By utilizing advanced PLC Tandem Synchronization, our Beam Lifting Gantry Cranes deliver the perfect balance of massive lifting capacity and surgical precision—ensuring that every girder reaches the bridge deck in flawless condition.
